  • Plaque at the volcanic crater, Mt Tabor Park, Portland, Oregon, USA: “Through the fiery throat of this volcano exploded glowing cinders which, cooling, formed the ground on which you now stand. Younger than the hundreds of volcanoes which poured out their lavas in the foot hills of Mt Hood, this cinder cone has withstood the ravages of time to become a part of Mt Tabor. It now stands peacefully in the City of Roses, the only major city in the United States that has a volcano within its borders. This tablet was installed by the Geological Society of the Oregon Country, August 8, 1952”.

  • The full moon rises over Mount Tabor Park, framed by the glass towers of the Oregon Convention Center, Portland, Oregon. This full moon appearing on the 31 July 2015 is called a Blue Moon, which refers to the second of two full moons appearing in the same calendar month. The last time this happened was in 2012, and another one isn't due until 2018.

  • Vegetated Filter Strip treats rain water runoff from parking lot before it reaches a swale which in turn discharges the stormwater into a nearby stream. Vegetated filter strips are now a widely accepted best management practice (BMP) for low impact development. They work on the principle of contact time and therefore require low runoff velocities. This is achieved by maintaining low-angled slopes and avoiding flow-concentrating features such as curbs.
