• Wave-washed Saint George Reef Lighthouse (12km distant), the only thing not in motion in a gale-lashed Pacific Ocean off the coast of northern California near Crescent City. The light marks the outer extents of a treacherous bank of shoal areas, rocks and breakers, about 3nm wide by 6.5nm out to sea, named "Dragon Rocks" by Sir Francis Drake and now "St George Reef" on current navigation charts. The location for the lighthouse was selected in 1865 after numerous notable losses, but construction was not completed until 1892 due to the obvious logistical and weather challenges. The most expensive lighthouse ever built in the USA. Manned and operated until 1975, when it was replaced by a nearby floating navigation light. The lighthouse was finally abandoned in 1995. Seen here from Point Saint George, in a rare view between fronts in an early winter storm. Very challenging getting any photograph at all in such fierce conditions of salt spray, rain and gale! Del Norte County, California, USA.

 • Modern bridge and ancient castle, this image shows the juxtaposition of 21st century and 10th century engineering. Puente de la Armada Española - 2006 (Bridge of the Navy) is a cable-stayed pedestrian suspension bridge over the Rio Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol in Spain. Fuengirola Castle or Castillo Sohail is a 10th century Arab castle occupied by the Moors and later conquered and ruined by the Christian Monarchs in 1485. Rebuilt by the French during the 1807 Peninsular War, and successfully defended from a British-Spanish force at the Battle of Fuengirola, 1810 by a band of 200 Polish soldiers. The castle was renovated in 1995.

Younger than the hundreds of volcanoes which poured out their lavas in the foot hills of Mt Hood, this cinder cone has withstood the ravages of time to become a part of Mt Tabor. It now stands peacefully in the City of Roses, the only major city in the United States that has a volcano within its borders. This tablet was installed by the Geological Society of the Oregon Country, August 8, 1952”.

 • A mini-series following my 44mm-high Homies character Pelon, where he poses for photo ops at potholes on the streets of Mount Tabor Park.
Leadership fixes potholes, not patching.
Chronic neglect of Portland’s streets is manifesting in the burgeoning number and size of dangerously large potholes across the city. Here, pothole road damage is seen in Mount Tabor Park, Portland, Oregon.
Engineering: From a technical perspective, a great deal of information can be gleaned from a deep pothole, as it provides a cross-section-view of the pavement structural section…or lack thereof, as in this case. Here, the asphalt wearing surface is heavily pitted, highly oxidized and brittle, confirming many years of neglect. The asphalt layer is minimal; confirming this road never received the maintenance originally planned. The size variation of aggregate chunks in the base course layer tells the story of a roadway constructed originally from well-graded materials. Roadway base course should be well-graded, faceted aggregate so as to provide optimum particle interlock. The breakup of pavement behind and to the left of Pelon – at the gutter – suggests that poor drainage played a role in this failure, and absence or repair has allowed water to saturate the base layers and complete the failure. This road has failed due to neglect and no amount of patching will restore a level of service – or service life – that should be reasonably expected of it.
• Snow covers the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho (left) and KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa, as far as the eye can see, in this aerial view northward along the Drakensberg escarpment. Photo taken at an altitude of about 3,400m (11,200 feet) from a Search and Rescue helicopter crossing the Nkosazana Ridge during the Drakensberg Snow Rescues July 7 to 11, 1996. This flight was part of an extensive 3-day search and rescue operation, coordinated jointly by SANDF 15 Squadron and the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA). The operation was initiated after receiving multiple missing person reports in the wake of the record snowfalls of July 1996. Ten helicopters were utilized in the operation: 4 Oryx, 4 BK117 and 2 Alouettes. In total, the search tally grew to 123 known to be unaccounted for – mostly overnight backpackers. All 123 were subsequently found, 66 were airlifted to safety, and the remainder, well prepared and in good health, chose to decline assistance. MCSA Mountain Search and Rescue team: Andrew Haliburton, Graham Smith, Steve Cooke, Greig Stewart, Carl Fatti, Egmont Geodeke, Gavin Raubenheimer, Jeremy Farquhason, Mike Maxfield, Sean Bartleet, Ian Bailey, Dr Ian Forsyth, George Morphis, Tod Collins. Lt-Col Eric Elphick headed up the team from 15 Squadron, comprising pilots, engineers and aircraft support. Nikon F90, Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70/3.5-4.5D. Fujichrome Velvia RVP 50.

 • The outstretched hand of Buster Simpson’s Beckoning Cistern (2002) manages roof stormwater runoff from the 81 Vine Street Building. The sculpture was funded by the Seattle Public Utilities 1% for Art Program to support the Growing Vine Street Project, a green street concept developed in the 1990s in Seattle’s Belltown district. The concept of Growing Vine Street is to use biofiltration and other Green Street elements to treat stormwater before it is released directly into Elliott Bay. This functional sculpture performs flow control and treatment for urban runoff in a visible and demonstrative way, bringing public awareness to the City’s water conservation efforts.

 • Peter DeFazio Bridge (1999) is a pedestrian and bicycle suspension bridge across the Willamette River in Eugene. Its eye-catching form displays interesting and unique architecture, with a modernist take on the classic suspension bridge. The DeFazio Bridge is celebrated for providing transportation and recreation opportunities that are in harmony with the natural environment, conveniently connecting several multi-use pathways and serving as primary bicycle-pedestrian artery between downtown Eugene and neighborhoods north of the river. Gradual grades on main span, approach ramps and stairs make this bridge the functional equivalent of the ultimate freeway spaghetti-interchange for pedestrians and bicyclists, yet its artful architecture compliments the beautiful urban park setting of Alton Baker Park. The DeFazio Bridge enhances accessibility to, and use of, the park – a marvel of modern bridge engineering. The bridge was designed by Jiri Strasky of Strasky Husty and Partners, and OBEC Consulting Engineers, built by Mowat Construction Company, and named after the Oregon Congressman. Lane County, Oregon, USA.

The river-rounded pebbles of the base course layer tell the story of a roadway constructed originally from deficient materials. Roadway base course should be well-graded, faceted aggregate so as to provide optimum particle interlock – a crushed and sieved mix from those same pebbles would suffice. Finally, from the moisture visible in the pothole, and the shape of terrain at the road shoulders, it is clear that poor drainage has contributed to the failure of this road. The conclusion is unequivocal; this road has failed and no amount of patching will restore a level of service – or service life – that should be reasonably expected of it.
• Celebration of Mount Tabor Park, one of the oldest urban parks in the United States. Located on an extinct volcanic cinder cone, and designed in 1909 by Emanuel T. Mische and John Charles Olmsted, this urban park incorporated working open water reservoirs, a vital link to bringing fresh, high-quality drinking water from Bull Run to the Portland area. These reservoirs have been condemned by new EPA regulations, and plans are already in progress for their elimination from the water distribution system. Standard format – 8.5" x 11" (217mm x 280mm) – full color. All photos © Andrew Haliburton.
