  • FEC New River Bridge (1978) is a single-leaf bascule railroad bridge spanning the navigable New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The design type is a through plate girder bridge of total span 70 feet /21.3m, providing a horizontal boat navigable clearance of 60 feet/18.3m. Additionally, the bridge comprises three 25-foot approach spans, plus a 14-foot machinery room span, from the north; and two 25-foot spans from the south. Notable was the use of weathering steel to eliminate environmental concerns around initial and future painting. By 1985, the weathering steel had reportedly reached a stable condition for its environment. One of the design criteria for this bridge was to double-track the crossing, removing the bottleneck of a single track bridge at this location dating back to 1912. Now, in the 21st Century, as freight trains are once again sharing the tracks with passenger trains operated by Brightline, alternatives are being studied through the New River Crossing Feasibility Study to further expand capacity by tunnel and various fixed/movable bridge replacement options.   • Wave-washed Saint George Reef Lighthouse (12km distant), the only thing not in motion in a gale-lashed Pacific Ocean off the coast of northern California near Crescent City. The light marks the outer extents of a treacherous bank of shoal areas, rocks and breakers, about 3nm wide by 6.5nm out to sea, named "Dragon Rocks" by Sir Francis Drake and now "St George Reef" on current navigation charts. The location for the lighthouse was selected in 1865 after numerous notable losses, but construction was not completed until 1892 due to the obvious logistical and weather challenges. The most expensive lighthouse ever built in the USA. Manned and operated until 1975, when it was replaced by a nearby floating navigation light. The lighthouse was finally abandoned in 1995. Castillo de Sohail was a 10th century Arab castle accupied by the Moors and later conquered and ruined by the Christian Monarchs in 1485.  Rebuilt by the French during the Peninsular War, and successfully defended from a British-Spanish force at the Battle of Fuengirola, 1810 by a band of 200 Polish soldiers.  Castle renovated in 1995.

  • The active Shark Island Lighthouse (steel lattice tower on left) stands just to seaward of the historic 1903 Shark Island Lighthouse (right), located atop the rugged granite peninsula that provides natural shelter to the tiny harbor of Luderitz.  The old lighthouse is a 12m (40 ft) square tower with attached 1-story keeper's house.  The lantern has been removed and the building has been made available for overnight accommodations, offering adventurous tourists the opportunity the stay in this genuine light house steeped in the maritime history of Namibia's rugged coastline, notorious for its harsh weather.

  • Mount St Helens ash eruption, 2005, viewed from Portland, Oregon.  As if to signal the 25th anniversary of the devastating 1980 eruption, Mount St. Helens released this symbolic outpouring of ash and steam at 17:30 on Tuesday evening, March 8, 2005.  Volcanic ash rose to 36,000 feet and fell as far away as 125 miles east of the mountain. The eruption began with practically no warning, an hour after a magnitude 2.0 earthquake on the volcano's east side, and lasted 30 minutes.  Mount St. Helens, a 8,364-foot (2550m) volcano, is located about 40 miles (60km) northeast of Vancouver, Washington, Portland's sister city across the Columbia River which divides the states of Oregon and Washington.  The river in the photograph is the Willamette River, which divides Portland's east and west sides.  The Columbia River is not visible in this image; it runs perpendicular to the Willamette.  Mount St. Helens was named for British diplomat Alleyne Fitzherbert whose title was Baron St. Helens.  The mountain was named by Commander George Vancouver and the officers of H.M.S. On 20 February 2021, a sculpture entitled “Bust of York”, by an unidentified artist, appeared on the pedestal of the former statue of Harvey Scott. The statue of Harvey W Scott was found toppled to the ground on the morning of 20 October 2020 following a series of statue removals during racial justice protests in Portland. Inscription reads: “York – The first African American to cross North America and reach the Pacific Coast.  Born into slavery in the 1770s to the family of William Clark, York became a member of the 1804 Lewis and Clark Expedition. Tough York was an enslaved laborer, he performed all the duties of a full member of the expedition. He was a skilled hunter, negotiated trade with Native American communities, and tended to the sick. Upon his return east with the Corps of Discovery, York asked for his freedom. Clark refused his request.  The date and circumstances of his death are unclear."
