Bridge Pier Protection Astoria-Megler Bridge
Deficient bridge pier protection (fenders) are a vulnerability to ship strikes in the busy Columbia River shipping channel under the Astoria Bridge. The Astoria-Megler Bridge (1966) spans the mouth of the Columbia River between Astoria, Oregon and Point Ellice near Megler, Washington. The bridge type is a steel cantilever through truss, designed jointly by the state highway departments of Oregon and Washington. Construction was started in 1962 and completed in 1966. Total length: 4.1 mi / 6.5km.
