Walnut Street Bridge (1891), spanning the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is an outstanding bridge of American historical significance. Comprising six main Camelback spans of 16-panel pin-connected through trusses, supported on tall piers of masterfully constructed masonry, the 722m (2,370ft) bridge is a major feat of structural engineering. A Camelback truss is a variation of a Parker truss, having a polygonal top chord of exactly five slopes. The bridge was designed by renowned engineer Edwin Thacher, and constructed by Smith Bridge Company of Toledo, Ohio. Further notable features include ornate original portal bracing, brutal welded I-beam supplementary portal bracing, and historically correct restored arch lattice railings. Wooden decking enhances the 1993 conversion to pedestrian and bicycle use. Thankfully, the bridge is richly documented in the Historic American Engineering Record. Hamilton County, Tennessee, USA.
