Bare trees and winter snow reveal the topography of a volcanic crater. Mount Tabor is one of dozens of extinct volcanic cinder cones comprising the Boring lava volcanoes. In 1903, John Charles Olmsted of the Massachusetts-based landscape design firm Olmsted Brothers recommended that a city park be developed at Mount Tabor. Portland Parks Superintendent Emanuel T. Mische, who had worked at Olmsted Brothers, consulted with Olmsted on the park layout and integration of the volcanic crater and water reservoirs into the park design.
