  • Juxtaposition of old and new; this viewpoint draws a lighthearted connection between the strong influence of Boston's historic past and its future. The figure is the statue of Colonel William Prescott, who gave the legendary command: "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes", at Bunker Hill Monument (statue inscribed June 17, 1775). The colonel's finger appears to touch the $100 million Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge across the Charles River, completed in 2005. The award-winning cable-stayed bridge, built as part of the Big Dig, has quickly become a modern-day icon for Boston.

  • Mount St Helens ash eruption, 2005, viewed from Portland, Oregon. As if to signal the 25th anniversary of the devastating 1980 eruption, Mount St. Helens released this symbolic outpouring of ash and steam at 17:30 on Tuesday evening, March 8, 2005. Volcanic ash rose to 36,000 feet and fell as far away as 125 miles east of the mountain. The eruption began with practically no warning, an hour after a magnitude 2.0 earthquake on the volcano's east side, and lasted 30 minutes. Mount St. Helens, a 8,364-foot (2550m) volcano, is located about 40 miles (60km) northeast of Vancouver, Washington, Portland's sister city across the Columbia River which divides the states of Oregon and Washington. The river in the photograph is the Willamette River, which divides Portland's east and west sides. The Columbia River is not visible in this image; it runs perpendicular to the Willamette. Mount St. Helens was named for British diplomat Alleyne Fitzherbert whose title was Baron St. Helens. The mountain was named by Commander George Vancouver and the officers of H.M.S. Discovery while exploring the northern Pacific coast from 1792 to 1794. Mount St. Helens erupted violently at 08:32 on Sunday, May 18, 1980. Nikon F4S, 70-300/4-5.6D. Fuji RVP100F..

  • Mural of Packy - the Asian elephant at the Oregon Zoo in Portland (14 April 1962 - 9 February 2017) - marked with paint in preparation for the addition of windows in the 1892 Packer-Scott building in Portland's Old Town/Chinatown. The historic building became the headquarters of Mercy Corps in 2009, after a $25 million renovation designed by THA Architecture. This mural of Packy was painted in 1990 by North Pacific Sign & Design. Many Packy fans visited the building and photographed it from the Burnside Bridge before the mural was lost. This photo was taken on 17 April 2008, three days after the real Packy celebrated his 46th birthday.

  • The 1743 map of the Mexican Harbour of Zihuatanejo by Commodore George Anson, displayed in the Archeological Museum of the Costa Grande, Zihuatanejo, Mexico. This copy photographed on 26 November 2011. Annotated in both Dutch and French, and prepared as plate number 26, presumably for eventual inclusion in the 1745 issue of Anson's Voyage round the World. • This solitary rock about a mile off the Bay of Zihuatanejo is known by various names: La Piedra Solitaria, Roca Negra and Rock of Chequetan. It is an important navigation aid to mariners and local fishermen, and a popular dive site amongst sport divers. Zihuatanejo, Mexico.

  • The heartwarming experience of turtle hatchlings returning to the sea just after sunset on the sheltered Pacific Ocean beach of Playa la Ropa, Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico. These green turtles (Chelonia mydas), once common, are now endangered and have been released by "turtle-saver" volunteers working to save them from extinction. Releasing them just after sunset maximizes their chances of survival by evading predators, both natural and human. Good luck little fellas!
